The Widowed Persons Support Group (WPS) is an organization in the Dallas metropolitan area whose members are widows and widowers of all ages. The purpose of the organization is to offer its members support and consolation through the sharing of similar experiences and to provide opportunities to meet new people through group meetings and social activities.
WPS offers grief counseling sessions three to four times a year to widowed persons who have lost their spouses within the past two and a half years. Trained outreach volunteers are also available on a one to one basis should a member find this kind of support helpful. To find out more about these activities, click here.
WPS sponsors a large number of social activities each month. These consist of breakfasts, luncheons, or dinners on a weekly or monthly basis in various parts of the Dallas metropolitan area including Plano, Lewisville, Garland, Irving and other cities. A monthly dinner with entertainment is designed to attract members from the entire Dallas area. The group sponsors occasional trips or cruises to destinations both within and outside the Dallas area. All WPS activities are open to all WPS members. For details concerning WPS social activities, click here.
WPS publishes a monthly newsletter which all active members receive. The newsletter always contains a calendar of social events for that month. Reservations for these events are handled through "captains" listed in the newsletter. In order to receive a copy of the current newsletter, simply call the WPS office at (214) 358-4155. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m.
WPS offers many opportunities for volunteer service. These include working as office staff members, coordinating arrangements for social events, helping to publish the newsletter and serving as outreach volunteers. For further information concerning these opportunities, click here.
WPS was established in 1984. It has no membership fees whatsoever but asks its members to make an annual contribution of any size to help cover the expenses of the organization. At social events the only charge is whatever is necessary to cover the cost of the event itself. WPS is self-supporting and receives no funds from any source other than its members.
